How to Prepare for your Paramedical Exam

A brief paramedical examination is required as a routine part of your application. A paramedical examiner will contact you to schedule a date and time for your paramedical examination at your earliest convenience. All information obtained during the paramedical examination is strictly confidential.

The paramedical examination is brief, usually lasting approximately 20 minutes. The exam consists of a series of questions about your medical history as well as measurements of your height, weight, blood pressure, and pulse. A urine specimen may also be collected. A small blood sample may also be required from some applicants!

To obtain the best possible results and save time, please follow these suggestions:

1. To avoid blood pressure / pulse becoming temporarily elevated…

  • Relax 10 minutes before the exam.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages, including beer and wine, for 24 hours before your examination.
  • Avoid smoking for 30 minutes before your exam.
  • Be sure to tell the paramedical examiner about any medications you are taking, both prescription and non-prescription.

2. Have available all of your doctor’s information including…

  • Names, addresses and phone numbers
  • Dates and reasons for past visits.
  • Please be complete as possible.

3. Drink a large glass of water 1 hour prior to your examination so you will be able to provide a urine sample.

4. Depending on your prospective insurance requirements, a small blood sample may be necessary. Applicants requiring a blood sample will be informed by the examiner when scheduling. A fasting blood sample, 4-6 hours of fasting  is preferred  Some insurance companies may require a longer fasting period of  8-12 hours. The blood draw is done by a specially trained nurse or paramedic using only sterile needles and sterile tubes. They are discarded immediately after use.

5. Our examiners are highly trained professionals and will do their best to make your exam as pleasant for you as possible. Please feel free to ask the examiner any questions or concerns you may have.
